From films to television to expressing opinions on social issues, Aamir Khan‘s sphere of influence is formidable. So it wasn’t entirely surprising when Aamir made it to Time Magazine’s list of ‘100 most influential people in the world’.

His name features alongside the who’s who of the

world, including politicians (US President Barack Obama, among them) and Hollywood actors. And at the Time gala held at Lincoln Centre, New York, on April 23, several Hollywood actors were present.

Among them was 2013 Academy Award-winning actor Daniel Day Lewis (for the lead role in Steven Spielberg’s 2012 film, Lincoln).

Aamir and Daniel were spotted interacting at the event. According to an onlooker, they had an extensive conversation about the
influence of their respective film industries. The onlooker adds, “I’m not privy to the details of the conversation, because there were too many guests.”

Aamir is believed to be an admirer of Daniel’s work. Recently, in an interview to HT Café, his nephew Imran Khan had said, “Daniel is one of our (Aamir and his) favourite actors. No doubt, he is a great actor, but more than that, the way he approaches and handles the craft is amazing.”

Aamir also met filmmaker Steven Spielberg at the do. Among the other guests present were Jimmy Fallon (actor), Jimmy Kimmel (comedian and TV personality), Padma Lakshmi (TV show host and cookbook author) and Lena Dunham (filmmaker-actor).

One of the highlights of the evening was a performance by American singer-songwriter Christina Aguilera.

Chopra’s first commercial as well as critical success was Waqt (1965), a multi-starrer family drama.

In 1973, Chopra founded his own production company Yash Raj Films.

Though he started out in late 50s, Chopra always had his finger on the pulse of the audience and continued to deliver blockbusters in every following decade.

His repertoire includes iconic Angry Young Man films like Trishul and Deewar, both featuring Amitabh Bachchan in central roles, but in the later years Chopra was more and more associated with the ‘romance’ genre.

Reacting to the news, filmmaker Subhash Ghai said, “Yashji was the guru of industry. He was always full of energy. He will be remembered forever.”

AK Hangal cremated; Bollywood biggies miss funeral

With prayers on their lips, friends and family members bid a tearful adieu to distinguished character actor A K Hangal at his funeral here.

Incidentally, none of the prominent Bollywood personalities attended Hangal’s last rites, performed by his son Vijay at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle, Mumbai, at around 1 PM.

“It’s a great loss… I am saddened by his demise. He was very happy and lively about his work and life. I can’t talk much now,” Hangal’s son Vijay told PTI.

Character artists including Rakesh Bedi, Raza Murad, Avatar Gill, singer-actress Ila Arun and a few others were seen at the crematorium uniting in grief at the demise of the man who played the role of grandfather, father, uncle or friend to various actors.

Hangal passed away early this morning due to brief illness aggravated by a fracture in his thigh bone at Asha Parekh Hospital in suburban Mumbai. He was 98.

“Though he was out of sight as he was not working in movies, he was not out of mind. He was my guru… he was an institution… I have learnt a lot from him,” Raza Murad said.

“He has worked with all superstars but it is sad that no big star from the industry came here today,” he said.

“He lived like a king. He was very active. He was never disheartened when he was out of work and money. He was not only an actor… he was a freedom fighter. It’s a great loss,” Ila Arun said.

Hangal is survived by his 74-year-old son Vijay as his wife Manorama predeceased him.

‘Ek Tha Tiger’ breaks all records, earns 35 crore on first day

'Ek Tha Tiger' breaks all records, earns 30 crore on first day

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ is likely to break all Box Office records. The hugely anticipated flick, which hit the theatres on August 15, has crossed the Rs 35 crore mark at the Box Office.

According to reports, the film is turning out to be Salman Khan’s fourth consecutive blockbuster and the biggest of all.

A leading daily quoted leading trade analyst Komal Nahata, as saying, “It is estimated to have made a record for a historic opening. It could also become the fastest movie to earn Rs 100 crore at the box office in the next 4-5 days.”

In fact, according to trade expert Taran Adarsh, this film has put Salman in a league of his own. “And I feel this is just the tip of the iceberg. The real scenario will unfold during Eid. Ek Tha Tiger will not just break all records, it will be the fastest one to do so. As of now, the day one collections have crossed Rs 35 crore,” said Adarsh.

There is something about the Salman-Katrina pairing. Something that goes deeper than a real-life affection. Here in ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, we see a look of genuine protectiveness in Salman’s eyes every time he looks at Katrina Kaif. That look suits the film’s purposes fine. ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ is the love story of two spies from different sides of the border who during the course of their volatile sinister cloak-and-dagger work, fall head over heels in love.

Dara Singh passes away after prolonged illness

Wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh, who was battling for life since the last five days, passed away early this morning.

84-year-old Singh was taken home from hospital by family members last night so that he could be with them in the last moments of his life.

“He passed away at 7.30 AM peacefully,” Dr Ram Narain, COO, Kokilaben Hospital, told PTI.

Singh was brought to the hospital on July 7 after he had suffered a cardiac arrest and since then he was in the ICU.

A wrestling hero to some and a much loved cine artist to others, it was a long and eventful life that triumphed many odds. In his over five-decade long acting journey, he featured in over 140 films, including classics such as “Anand” and “Mera Naam Joker“.

It was a many splendoured life.

There was Dara Singh the wrestler, Dara Singh, the hero of ‘B’ category action films such as “Tarzan Comes to Delhi” and “Samson” in the 1950s and 1960s, Dara Singh, the friendly ‘pehelwan‘ in “Anand“, and then Dara Singh who played Hanuman with great effect in the TV blockbusters “Ramayan” and “Mahabharat“.

He was last seen in the Kareena Kapoor-Shahid Kapoor starrer “Jab We Met” as the stern, lovable ‘Daarji’ who ruled over a noisy, close-knit Sikh family. Quite like the real life man, who intimidated people with his 6′ 2″ frame but soon won them over with outgoing nature and warmth.

Born to Balwant Kaur and Surat Singh Randhawa Nov 19, 1928 in a village in Amritsar, Punjab, Dara Singh was encouraged to take up wrestling due to his imposing physique and trained in ‘pehelwani’, an Indian style of wrestling. He became a star wrestler – and not just on Indian turf.

Dara Singh took on international wrestlers like Lou Thesz and Stanislaus Zbyszko, and had over 500 professional fights to his credit – all undefeated.

He won the Professional Indian Wrestling Championship in 1953, and took away the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship trophy in 1959 by defeating Canadian champion George Godianko.

A recipient of titles like Rustam-E-Punjab (1966) and Rustam-E-Hind (1978), Dara Singh retired from active wrestling in 1983. In 1989, he published his autobiography “Meri Atmakatha” in Punjabi, and seven years later was inducted into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame.

And while he was wrestling, he was making a name in cinema – both Hindi and Punjabi.

His first release was the 1952 “Sangdil” and then came a succession of films like “King Kong”, “Faulad”, “Sher-e-Watan” that earned him the name of Bollywood’s action king.

During his hey day as a hero, he teamed up with Mumtaz in 16 Hindi films, including “Jawan Mard“, “Raaka”, Aandhi Aur Toofan“, “Daku Mangal Singh“, “Boxer” and “Veer Bhimsen“.

Another successful phase in Dara Singh’s acting career came when he bagged the role of Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar’s epochal TV series “Ramayan” in 1986. People liked him so much that B.R. Chopra roped him in to play the same role in “Mahabharat”.

Dara Singh gave viewers a glimpse of his humorous side through shows like “Hadd Kar Di” and “Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka“.
He became a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from August 2003 to August 2009.

Dara Singh also took on the role of a writer, director and producer. In 1978, he launched Dara Studio, a self-contained mini-city with all facilities within the compound, in Punjab’s Mohali district.

Dara Singh, who was widowed and got married for the second time, leaves behind his wife, six children – three sons and three daughters. And legions of fans of a man who defined machismo.
