Notice regarding demonstrations in Bangkok
Anti-government demonstrations have continued to take place in parts of Bangkok since early November 2013. Protesters have blockaded certain locations in Bangkok starting from 13 January 2014. These include some government buildings and major intersections in popular tourist areas such as Asok-Sukhumvit, Silom, Ratchaprasong, Pathumwan, Lumphini, Lat Phrao and Chaeng Wattana as well as other intersections.
Government of Thailand has invoked Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations (2005) in all districts of Bangkok and Nonthaburi as well as the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan (which includes Suvarnabhumi International Airport) and the Lat Lum Kaeo district of Pathum Thani with effect from 22 January 2014 for a period of sixty (60) days.
Indians travelling to Thailand and residents in Bangkok may encounter increased security presence and should be prepared for traffic disruptions and stoppings. They are advised to regularly monitor the situation through local media, their hotels, tour operators etc. Travellers coming from or going to airport may factor in at least one additional hour for travel to/from city in view of potential traffic jams. Usual precautions for personal safety should be undertaken and areas where protests are taking place should be avoided. Government has also announced Police helplines at Tel No. 1599 and 191 and Traffic updates at 1197 will be operational at all hours.
