Stellar Winter Fest 2010

The Ministry of Science and Technology is launching a star gazing festival in a bid to encourage the general public to learn more about the sky and astronomy.

According to Santi Sathippong of the Science and Technology Ministry, the Ministry Office, in cooperation with the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT), will hold a star gazing festival under the title of ‘Stellar Winter Fest 2010’. The event is aimed at encouraging the Thai public, youngsters in particular, to be more active in astronomy activities.

Astronomers have advised people to witness two astronomical phenomena this winter; the first being the Leonid meteor shower, which would be seen between 3 am to 6 am on November 18; the other the Geminid meteor shower, beginning at midnight on December 14. It is noted that both phenomena are macroscopic, observable by the naked eyes.

Activities in relation to those astronomical phenomena will be held at Doi Intanon, Chiang Mai. For more information please contact the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) at 053-225-569.
