The Hindu community is the most educated among 30 religious groups in the United States, based on college degrees, reveals data based on a study by Pew Research Centre.

The Unitarians Universalists, Jews, Anglicans are among the religious groups that follow. Over 35,000 US adults were surveyed in the Pew’s 2014 Religious Landscape Study.

The Pew study has reportedly used the four-year college degree, stating that it is generally regarded as the “key asset for economic success.”

The Hindus constitute the largest group with 77 percent holding a college degree, Unitarian – a religious group that draws inspiration from various religious scriptures – come second with 67 percent

While atheists and agnostics recorded for 43 percent and 42 percent respectively,

Muslims accounted 39 percent and Catholics 26 percent.

The most educated community could also be the wealthiest. The study strikes a correlation between education and economic success, four-in-ten Jews and a third of Hindus belong to households with annual incomes of at least $1,00,000.

“Given the strong correlation between educational attainment and economic success, it is not surprising that Jews and Hindus, on average, have high household incomes, with four-in-ten Jews (44%) and roughly a third of Hindus (36%) living in households with annual incomes of at least $100,000,” the report said, citing the study.

Synopsis

Leaders are born in times of crisis… this axiom can be summed into a trite preposition… greater the crisis bigger is the leader. Indian summer of 2004 saw the grand old political party of India Indian National Congress face one of its biggest crisis since its inception. Stalwarts from the grand old party and opposition were not in favour of Sonia Gandhi heading the government it was in fact one of the agenda or rather hidden agenda on which the memorable election of 2004 fought.

Post results it was evident that INC will head the coalition and if INC heads the government then Sonia will be the Prime Minister. Those who had opposed her foreign origin had now come around… those who had ideological differences with INC decided to forget it for the time being… in short all was set for the coronation and once again someone from the powerful Gandhi and Nehru clan was going to head the government… it is at this point fate decided to intervene… a twist of fate created a void and Sonia Gandhi was out of the race. Time was ripe for someone who would be acceptable to all factions… be noncontroversial… astute to pull the country through the financial crisis that was looming large… all of these qualities were supposedly found in one man who was Sardar Manmohan Singh, the man who has been around for more than three decades.

Sardar Manmohan Singh, a reserved, shy, without any political ambitions whatsoever; a man who has never been known for his oratory skills or for charismatic presence; a man who made one of the most humble beginnings.  Above all a man with no iota of any lineage to stake claim to the most coveted position; a man who has been dubbed as ‘the best Cabinet Secretary that the country never had’ is suddenly poised to become the Prime Minister of the largest democracy in the world.

However accidental the appointment might have been, Sardar Manmohan Singh was well aware of his responsibilities and the power that he had in him, the position to continue his mission for the country. Was he as naïve as the popular perception about him has always been? Was it a façade that he carefully built? With the passage of time he started displaying the brilliance of his acumen in understanding people, relationships and tackling situations… from appointment of people at key positions be it Sanjay Baru… Montek Singh Ahluwalia or be it dealing with the power play with the left.

The Accidental Prime Minister derives heavily from the book of the same title by Sanjay Baru, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s spin doctor in the capacity of media officer at the PMO. It is due to Baru’s ring side view and other journalistic accounts of that era that the film is able to project a revelatory picture of the prime minister working in a government that worked for 10 long years with two centres of power.

The audiences will witness the thrilling drama that unfolded not only in the ‘making but also the unmaking of Dr. Manmohan Singh.’ A fast paced and entertaining narrative of the political manipulations, the juicy tit bits of the corridors of power, the film would feed the insatiable hunger and curiosity of millions about what really had transpired during one of the most enigmatic periods in Indian political history… UPA I & II.

Nation marks Constitution Day

Today marks National Constitution Day, observing the importance of the administrative document and celebrating its 20 incarnations throughout the democratic history of Thailand.

Constitution Day in Thailand marks the date King Rama VII graciously signed the first charter into effect on December 10, 1932. The document transitioned the country’s administrative system to a democratic monarchy and paved the way for the establishment of Parliament and Cabinet. Under the first constitution, the nation’s monarch appointed the Cabinet, which was then tasked with administrating the nation and the Parliament, which in turn established legislation and kept the Cabinet in check.

Both the Cabinet and the monarch under the initial charter were empowered to dissolve Parliament to protect the nation’s best interests and call new general elections. The charter placed the Kingdom’s monarch in a position of great respect.

The 20th constitution, drafted when the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) assumed power in 2014, came into effect on April 6, 2017, and is considered a restart of democracy in Thailand. It paved the way for a general election to take place in 2019.

The Indians are coming! Expect ten million in ten years say ATTA

PHOTO: LookEast Magazine

Tourism from India will increase markedly over the next ten years. This prediction from the head of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, Wichit Prakorpkoson. By 2028 he says he expects 10 million Indian visitors each year. About Chinese tourism, the ATTA chief say he expected the numbers to slow from previous trends but there will still be 20 million visitors from China coming to Thailand annually in ten years time.

Speaking to Thai Rath, he also called for the free visa-on-arrival scheme to be extended to after Songkran (April 13) and make it easier for tourists to visit neighboring countries.

He predicted that Chinese tourism would be back to normal by January 2019 after the downturn in Q4, 2018. He says 10.5 million visitors from China have come to Thailand this year among the 38 million total arrivals.

“The 20% growth in Chinese tourism year-on-year is no longer sustainable but I expect 11-11.5 million Chinese to come in 2019.

He says he expects a dramatic surge in Indian tourism –  1.5 million visitors for 2018. But he expects this to grow to 20% a year and be 3 million visitors annually in five years time and 10 million in ten years time.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat revealed in the same article that requests have been made and granted for an increase in flights from India into Phuket and Don Muang airports.

He also wants to make renting vehicles easier for tourists by making temporary licences easier to get and doing away with fines levied on people renting to those without licences.

Gurpurab 2018: Why Do We Celebrate Gurunanak Jayanti Or Gurpurab?

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2018: Gurpurab is celebrated as the day to remember the holy guru, Guru Nanak

Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti is the celebration of the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak, who laid the foundation of Sikhism. This year, Gurpurab will be celebrated on November 23. Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti is the most auspicious day in Sikhism and will celebrated with fervour on Friday, even as Gurpurab is celebrated of different days each year based on the Indian lunar calendar. This year would be the 549th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. “Gurpurab” is made of two words– “Gur”, which means Guru or master, and “Purab”, which means parv in Hindi, meaning day. So Gurpurab is the day dedicated to the Guru.

Festivities on Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurpurab are centred around the birth anniversaries of the ten Sikh gurus. The tenth and the last Sikh Guru was Guru Gobind Singh. After him, the sacred book of Sikhs, the Adi Granth or Guru Granth Sahib, which contains the writings of the gurus, is considered the guru.

Guru Nanak Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated as the day to remember the holy guru, Guru Nanak, and is a reminder for the followers of Sikhism to remember his teachings and overcome the five vices – lust, greed, attachment, anger and pride and devote one’s life in the selfless service of God.

A look at the life of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak:

Guru Nanak was born to Kalayan Das Mehta and Matta Tripat. From an early age, Guru Nanak had a spiritual inkling. He refused to wear the upper-caste Hindu-worn sacred thread as he did not believe in superficial aspects of religion. Guru Nanak said he would rather wear the God’s name in heart that could never be broken or get impure.

Guru Nanak worked as a storekeeper in a granary of Daulat Khan Lodi in Sultanpur, where he came in contact with Mardana, a Muslim servant. Together they organised gatherings for Hindus and Muslims where they sang hymns to praise the creator.

Guru Nanak was married at the age of 18 and bore two sons. But when Guru Nanak turned 28, he disappeared for three days. Upon returning, he said that there is no Hindu or Muslim but only one formless God which could be worshipped by all. Guru Nanak said that a constant remembrance of God, called naamsimran, is the only way to liberation.

These teachings of Guru Nanak stood out against the religious practices of his time and became part of Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs.
