Roy movie review

The most obvious and good fact about Roy is that its story isn’t borrowed from any Bollywood or Hollywood’s earlier suspense or con dramas. Vikramjit Singh brings in a fresh tale uninspired from any other flick and delivers it with a strong cast, which everyone has been talking about ever since its conceptualization.

There was a necessity to rope in these three stars so that you are hooked on to your seats while watching the flick, which demands your patience and devotion.

The con-man story, which our onscreen filmmaker Kabir (Arjun Rampal) has been capitalizing over, isn’t fast-paced or stuffed with innumerable action sequences.

Stars- Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez
Director- Vikramjit Singh
Music director- Ankit Tiwari, Amaal Mallik, Meet Bros Anjjan

It slowly evokes an emotion of curiosity, attachment for the protagonist and swiftly exposes a mystery surrounding throughout. The mystery of the con-man Roy (Ranbir Kapoor) is dealt in Malaysia where numerous theft activities particularly of paintings have taken place but no one has a slightest idea about his whereabouts. Filmmaker Kabir is interested in this man’s story and incorporates that into his films.

Ayesha (Jacqueline Fernandez), on the other hand is another filmmaker and also Kabir’s new girlfriend. How these three characters’ lives merge together in one dramatic, romantic and suspenseful thriller is what Roy is all about.

Debutant Vikramjit Singh succeeds in building suspense by giving the movie a required love angle. There is betrayal, regret and conspiracy which lead us to a brilliant climax that no one would have thought of.

The movie however walks slowly but this is how it is meant to be. In an unhurried tale, the liveliness evokes in the form of brilliant numbers ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai’, ‘Chitiya Kalaiya’ and ‘Tu Hai Ki Nahi’ among others while Roy’s calls to cop investigating this case (Rajit Kapoor relives the simplicity of Byomkesh Bakshi in this role) adds fun.

But in the scenery settings of Malaysia, which is exceptionally cinematographed by Himman Dhamija, Arjun-Jacqueline’s and Ranbir-Jacqueline’s chemistry add more depth. Jacqueline’s twin factor works with both the actors and it gels well with the screenplay too.

The performances are undoubtedly of top notch and neither of the three is less than the other. Ranbir Kapoor is at ease. He is cool and calm and never unnecessarily shows his vigorous side unless required.

Arjun Rampal as a mastermind playing games while churning out his film story gives a genuine performance. One has to admit that Jacqueline Fernandez gives her best act till date. As a movie director and as an art enthusiast, Fernandez gives a compelling display of performance unlike her earlier ones.

Roy ultimately makes up for a perfect Valentine’s Day treat to lovers with a sweet twist in the end.

Whether you’re a Salman Khan fan or not, you just cannot afford to miss ‘Kick’

Woo hoo, now that’s what we call a comeback, Salman Khan unleashed the second flick of the year and he blows away your wits. Sajid Nadiadwala, who is marking his directorial debut with Kick, roped in Salman Khan intentionally because his spark is incomparable and he already sensed what he could yield him.

Stars- Salman Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Saurabh Shukla, Sanjay Mishra
Director- Sajid Nadiadwala
Music- Himesh Reshamiya, Meet Bros Anjjan, Yo Yo Honey Singh

Salman comes in and devotes that extra effort, which would certainly overshadow his earlier flicks and necessarily his this year’s Rs 125 cr earner flop Jai Ho. By watching this 2 hours 25 minutes masala entertainer, we can say that Salman Khan is meant for those roles that require him to enjoy his character. What lacked in Jai Ho was the notorious and carefree attitude of actor, which has won him appreciation in most of his flicks like Ready, Dabangg series to name a few.

No wonder this attitude of his is the real winner for Kick again. Take that scene where he teases police inspector and says ‘hatkadi laga ke le chalo, isme kick hai’, or that one where he challenges Randeep Hooda to stop him from robbing. Salman never leaves a frame without his trademark ‘kick’ which we would say is ‘madness’. And we can’t stop adoring him for that.

The flick opens with psychiatrist Shaina (Jacqueline Fernandez) meeting Himanshu (Randeep Hooda), an Indian police officer, for marriage. On their journey in train, Shaina narrates her story with ex-beau Devil (Salman Khan) to Himanshu. We are taken to flash back when good-hearted Devil helped Shaina’s friend (Sumona Chakravarty) in getting married since her mother was against this nuptial. However, Shaina initially hated Devil for his unusual blatant ‘kick’ approach but later fell for him. Devil, who could never stick to one single job, decides to get serious but again he quits it within four days and the two part ways.

On the other hand, Himanshu too had his own story which is giving him sleepless nights. He had earned medals by solving massive cases but there is one cunning thief with a mask whose mystery remains unresolved. That con has robbed big banks and billionaires just for fun and never got trapped.

Do both these stories have any co-relation; we would recommend you to find it out yourself and get your ‘Kick’. However, like all other Salman Khan flicks there are flaws. Himanshu’s attempts to catch the thief lack authenticity. Devil’s cool and casual interaction with the cops is added just to tickle funny bone of the viewers. The twist in the climax by the minister (Saurabh Shukla) too doesn’t make any sense.

But we hardly pay heed to them since, action and humour along with Salman Khan, paint those blemishes. Our eyes wink when the superstar romances with Fernandez, we are thrilled when he rides a cycle, or jumps over the top of a bus. Nawaruddin Siddiqui interaction with Salman Khan is among one of the memorable shots.

Nadaiawala capitalizes his supporting actors immensely. Keeping in mind Randeep’s Jannat 2’s cop act and Nawaz’s ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ epic performance, Nadiadawala ropes in and brings out the similar impressive shades in the flick, which work brilliantly.

Both Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui take away their share of applause in this Salman Khan flick. When you watch this bad man played by Nawaz on screen, it’s just him and you can’t take your eyes off.

Randeep Hooda as an intense cop is again impressive. He brings in the required right expression and never blinks an eye in front of the baddies.

Jacqueline Fernandez, besides adding glamour and romancing with Salman Khan, gives a brilliant performance. She is not among those who just look good in trendy clothes and don’t act at all.

Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Mishra deliver required humour and are once again great in their respective characters.

But obviously the show stealer is Salman Khan. His onscreen presence lends exceptional weight age to the flick. He amuses you with one-liners, gives you an edge of the seat thrill with nicely choreographed stunts.

Music by Himesh Reshamiya is already a chart-buster. Watching those songs on big screen is like celebrating them. Jumme Ki Raat, Hangover and Yaar Na Mile are visually delighting.

Don’t think too much, just step into the theatre for Salman is waiting to rule your hearts once again.

Verdict: Kick is one of the best films of 2014 so far. Whether you’re a Salman Khan fan or not, you just cannot afford to miss ‘Kick’. It is the perfect example of how even masala entertainers can be considered good cinema.
