Ali Abbas Zafar’s Tiger Zinda Hai is an out and out Salman Khan-film and tailor-made for his loyal fan base who wouldn’t miss the film for the world. But that also is the saddest part of the film in that we’ve reduced an actor to just being a ‘superstar’.
A sequel to 2012’s Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai picks up from where the first film left off. Somewhere in Austria, Tiger (Salman Khan) is now a married man living with wife Zoya (Katrina Kaif) and son Junior. Both stars reprise their roles as spy agents for RAW and ISI respectively and when 40 nurses (25 Indian and 15 Pakistani) are taken hostage in Iraq by religious extremist group ISIL, Chief Shenoy (Girish Karnad) hunts Tiger down and assigns him the job of rescuing Indian nurses. Upon a little convincing by Zoya, Tiger sets out on the mission and forms his special team, comprising of actors Angad Bedi, Paresh Pahuja and Kumud Mishra. Events unfold and Zoya and her team join in and the rescue mission is now a joint venture between RAW and ISI. How the teams unite and devise several strategies to free the nurses make up the basic plot of the film.
It’s a fact that Salman Khan’s loyal fan base doesn’t necessarily look at a film plot or its lack thereof but buy the ticket to see their hero pulling off some unbelievable stunts and delivering some whistle-worthy dialogues. And Zafar, who has previously helmed Sultan, co-starring Salman and Anushka, knows the audience quite well and serves them just what they’ll like- a savior in the face of Salman bhai. The entire film is an out and out Salman-film wherein he does all that he wishes to and all that was possible in the hands of filmmakers and yet remains unharmed. He does what he does the best and like his fans would say, Salman is in his element throughout. What his element is, however, remains a separate topic of debate.
The initial scenes wherein Salman and Katrina share the frame are warm and family-like. But Katrina, who opts for a rather straight face throughout the film, barring one or two scenes, only shines when she throws a punch or perhaps in the song Dil Diyan Galan wherein she looks gorgeous. That’s all. As an ISI agent set out on a mission, one’d have expected a lot more screen time for Zoya but alas.
The supporting cast, too, holds their own in whatever little screen time and dialogues they get alongside Salman. Iranian actor Sajjad Delafrooz, who plays ISC Commissioner Abu Usman, does a fine job but his fluency in both English and Hindi, turns out a little disturbing for the character. While Paresh Rawal as Firdaus is a delight and evokes chuckles every time he’s on screen.
Much that makes Tiger Zinda Hai a far from unbearable watch includes its technical finesse. The film, which isn’t bad per se, rides high on high-octane action sequences and there’s plenty of them. While some of which are amusing, some are too far-fetched. Right in the first half, Tiger battles a pack of wolves, rides a horse, jumps terraces and begins to take on ISIS alone until of course, Zoya joins. But having said that, the well-tuned combination of chase sequences and the background score make the action impactful. The technical finesse of camerawork, cinematography and the entire post-production rounds it up to a visual delight and makes it difficult for you to take eyes off the screen.
Over the years, Salman has established himself as a super-star who fans only expect a certain kind of entertainment from and Zafar has categorically cashed in on Salman’s heroic figure- both onscreen and offscreen- and in a way, reduced the real-life incident of 46 nurses taken hostage in Iraq to a hero-worship story with strong bits of patriotism and Indo-Pak ties thrown. As a spy thriller set in the world of espionage, cinegoers might have felt better with more thrills and less of Salman’s heroic presence but nevertheless, the film might give them the potboiler entertainment they’ve been searching for in the year that saw the likes of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal and Salman Khan’s Tubelight come crashing down at the box office.
Inspired by real events, Tiger Zinda Hai is a sequel to the blockbuster 2012 Ek Tha Tiger.
An espionage action drama that follows a daring rescue mission in Iraq.
Indian agent Tiger and Pakistani agent Zoya join forces in the name of humanity, against the militant messiah Abu Usman. Tiger Zinda Hai is an allout entertainer that tells a strong story, spiced up with gritty action, music, dance and drama.
Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif take on an impossible mission
This December (22nd), ‘There will be peace’, the movie promises
Over five years since Ek Tha Tiger sent Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif on a globe-trotting spy escapade, YRF has released a trailer for the follow-up.
As we’ve known for a while, the sequel is called Tiger Zinda Hai and it appears to begin … in Iraq.
With the background voiceover teasing a perennial battle between good and evil, light and dark, 25 Indian nurses are taken hostage by what looks like an ISIS parallel. The development causes a mass stir in India but mounting a rescue mission is hardly going to be like taking candy from a baby.
Are there any takers?
Just the one! And his name is Tiger.
The apex predator, who is equally adept on a snowboard as he is on horseback, brings together a team which also happens to include a Pakistani spy. And together, they attempt to achieve the impossible!
Snowboards, Horses … and ATVs
With the situation quickly escalating and the potential fallout from any operation including global ramifications, Tiger and his ISIS counterpart engage in a fierce battle of blood and guts, bullets and bombs.
Tiger Zinda Hai, written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar releases on December 22.
Tiger Zinda Hai: This Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif film has already caught the attention of fans with the team’s regular updates. And now in an exciting new detail, it has been revealed to indianexpress.com that TZH’s action sequences will be directed by the same action director as Christian Bale’s The Dark Knight.
Fan have been waiting with bated breath for Ali Abbas Zafar directorial Tiger Zinda Hai, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, ever since its announcement. The regular updates from the Tiger Zinda Hai team about Salman and Katrina’s whereabouts have already piqued fans’ interest. But now, we at indianexpress.com have got our hands on an exciting new detail which will give fans another reason to watch this edge-of-the-seat entertainer.
Just like its predecessor, Tiger Zinda Hai focuses on delivering some world-class level action sequences that have never been seen before in a Bollywood film. And in that regard, the team has roped in Tom Struthers who has also worked in Batman: The Dark Knight, to design the fight scenes for the film.
The Tiger Zinda Hai team had shot an extensive schedule in Abu Dhabi, especially some action sequences. And for the purpose, choppers, jets, army vehicles, and heavy artillery from the Emirates’ army were at YRF’s disposal.
Salman can be seen shooting out of a flying car in this new still revealed by the makers. Even Katrina looks all geared up while posing with the cast and crew.
Talking about Tom Stutters, director Ali Abbas Zafar said, “Tom is a master of high octane action sequences and here, his brief was to create action that is both larger than life and yet, realistic. He has delivered sequences that will stay with audiences for a long time.” Struthers also explains further, “We’ve had to create a lot of explosions for the film. We’ve blown up fifteen vehicles, of which four are moving vehicles. One of them is a 40 tonne truck which made a lot of noise when it blew up! What was difficult to make (referring to the action sequences), actually feels beautiful to watch now. The action that has been created for Tiger Zinda Hai is good as any other film that I have done.”
Bankrolled by Yash Raj Films, this Salman-Katrina espionage drama releases on Dec 22.

Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: Script Analysis
A unique and interesting story. Anurag Basu pens an intriguing tale of a father-son story. But there is more to it than just father-son bonding. Jagga’s father Professor Bagchi’s secret mission and Jagga’s search for his missing father is what takes the story forward.
Katrina Kaif’s character has been created in such a way that till the end the viewer would feel confused whether she is Jagga’s sister or friend. What is she? Find it yourself after watching the film! Another major confusion being the locations, in one moment it’s Moynaguri, the next moment it’s Purulia and then Manipur’s Ukhrul. At times it’s difficult to make out where they are. Also, I think there was a major confusion between Kenya’s Mombasa and Brazil’s Mombaca.
Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: Star Performance Ranbir Kapoor as Jagga shows what he is capable of. He is a gem of an actor! Watch the film for Ranbir if not for anything else!
Katrina as school teacher Shruti tries her best and does a decent job.
Saswata Chatterjee as Professor Bagchi is excellent, Rajatava Chatterjee as police inspector and Saurabh Shukla as the antagonist are good. Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: Direction, Music
Anurag Basu takes you on a musical adventurous journey. The film is engaging from the very beginning. However, it tends to stretch in the beginning of the second half and it could be tiring to hold your patience here. A little more effort was needed on the film’s editing. The film regains pace as it moves towards the climax.
Basu has chosen a set of excellent and veteran actors in the form of Bengali actors Saswata Chatterjee, Rajatava Dutta, and Bollywood actor Saurabh Shukla, all of who play major roles in the film. S Ravi Varman does a nice job with the camera. The film has been shot in scenic landscapes and nice sets. However, in several scenes, the fake background was clearly understandable, (as it used to be during black and white and early color films) which is surprising in this era of magnificent visual effects.
Pritam take a bow! Excellent use of music in weaving dialogues into songs and poetry. However, in one particular scene, the music sounded similar to Satyajit Ray’s iconic detective film Sonar Kella (the camel scene for those who have watched it). Songs Galti se mistake and the rap song Khaana khaake are my picks from the album.
Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: The Last Word
I would highly recommend watching this musical with a fresh and interesting script and nice music. This is surely one of Ranbir Kapoor’s best performances. 3.5 stars!
