PRD holds workshop on ‘Maintaining Credibility and Trust in Journalism’

The Thai Government’s Public Relations Department (PRD) is today holding “Maintaining Credibility and Trust in Journalism”, a collaborative workshop for addressing fake news in ASEAN

PRD Deputy Director-General Dr. Charoon Chaisorn presided over the opening ceremony of the workshop. He said the PRD is fully aware of the opportunities and challenges of communication in the digital era. Through digital sources, there has been a massive increase in the reach of media. However, disinformation and fake news may come appear in various forms and at any time. He believes that the professional journalists should jointly deal with this issue, and that they will be able to tackle the spread of fake news and disinformation, thus negating its negative effects more effectively.

On the regional stage, ASEAN member countries were urged to drive mechanisms to address disinformation and fake news while promoting education to improve media-literacy in the region. The call was made at the 14th Conference of ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information in Singapore in May 2018. This is a similar focus to that of the Communication and Information Sector under UNESCO.

UNESCO Bangkok Director Shigeru Aoyagi said disinformation and fake news are issues around the world. Fake news is content that is deliberately and intentionally fabricated, but pretends to be true and to be news, and produced with the intention of benefiting its creator. Most recently UNESCO produced a Handbook for Journalism Education and Training entitled ‘Journalism, ‘Fake News’ and Disinformation. It has been translated into Vietnamese and is currently under translation into Thai.

In the workshop, participants learn from the challenges posed by information disorder and work together to identify effective responses for strengthening and rebuilding trust in journalism in ASEAN countries.

  • Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) on Sunday acknowledged Hindi language as its third official language after Arabic and English
  • External Affairs Minister of India, Sushma Swaraj, took to her official Twitter account and praised the UAE decision
  • Indians, reportedly form the largest immigrant community in the UAE, with more than three million living in Dubai

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) on Sunday acknowledged Hindi language as its third official language after Arabic and English.

While praising the decision of the UAE court, External Affairs Minister of India, Sushma Swaraj, took to her official Twitter account, as saying,

“We thank Abu Dhabi for declaring Hindi as one of the official languages in their judicial system. This will make the justice delivery system simpler and more accessible to our people.”

Indians, reportedly form the largest immigrant community in the UAE, with more than three million living in Dubai. The landmark decision undertaken by the judicial department will benefit a major chunk of workers, who mostly come from Hindi speaking regions of central and north India, Gulf News reported.

On a positive note, the Indian workforce in UAE can now file their complaints to the labour counts in the country in their own mother-tongue. The complaints can be over issues related to delayed wages, end of service entitlements, bonuses, compensations for arbitrary layoffs, notice periods and annual leaves, as well as claims for air tickets and the return of their passports.

While filling the complaint, the Indians emigrants will have to fill the name of the complainant and details regarding his job and salary in Hindi. The complainant is also required to upload the supporting documents. Hindi language forms can now be downloaded and additional details over the litigation procedures are available on the ADJD website.

Addressing on the court’s decision, Undersecretary of the ADJD, Yousuf Saeed Al Abri, said that the move was undertaken so that the judicial system of the country could play a major role in attracting foreign investments and enhancing Abu Dhabi to become an attractive business destination, especially for a skilled workforce.

“The adoption of multilingual interactive forms for claim sheets, grievances, and requests, aims to promote judicial services in line with the Plan Tomorrow 2021, and increase the transparency of litigation procedures through the provision of bilingual forms which allow foreigners to know the litigation procedures, their rights, and duties without a language barrier,” Al Abri added.

67 US lawmakers show up at Hill reception for new Indian ambassador Harsh Vardhan Shringla

In a ringing bipartisan and continued endorsement of ties with India, 67 US lawmakers, both senators and member of the House of Representatives, joined a reception on Capitol Hill Thursday to welcome the new Indian ambassador, Harsh Vardhan Shringla.

Among them were the leaders of the Senate and House India caucuses John Cornyn (Republican), Mark Warner (Democrat), Michael Holding (R) and Brad Sherman (D), Indian Americans Raja Krishnamurthy (D), Pramila Jayapal (D) and Ro Khanna (D), and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D), the first Hindu in US congress and now a presidential hopeful.

Numbers matter on the Hill. And 67 is a significant turnout, and one that drew comparison with the attendance at event about Israel, whose legendary clout in the United States and among lawmakers is general taken to be the gold standard. “We are on out way,” said an Indian diplomat with a sense of satisfaction.

Shringla took office earlier in January presented his credentials o President Donald Trump soon after, no mean feat as ambassadors are known to take while, some times months, to get to that stage. And now a grand reception on the Hill, which is home to US congress.

They arrived in groups or solo, sometimes accompanied by their Indian American constituents, spoke briefly, hung around posing for pictures and selfies and left. Senator Cornyn, who founded the senate India Caucus in 2004, roping in then Democratic senator Hillary Clinton as co-chair, recalled how he has had string of co-chairs since. Warner has been Cornyn’s co-hair for some years now..

“You need only look around this room to see the enthusiasm of your constituents who have flown in from all parts of the United States to be with us here today,” Ambassador Shringla said, in a nod to the buzz and excitement in the room. “It is no co-incidence that the bi-partisan India Caucus is the largest country specific Caucus on the Hill.”

The ambassador went on to detail, briefly, the growing trade, defense and diplomatic ties between the two countries and the unstinting support from the two caucuses and the role they have played — from the passage of the civil nuclear agreement to the codification of the designation of India as a Major Defense Partner.

“I am confident that with your continued support, we will realize the immense potential of this relationship which promises to be a defining one for the 21st century,” Shringla said in conclusion.

Hindus Most Educated Religious Community in US: Report

The Hindu community is the most educated among 30 religious groups in the United States, based on college degrees, reveals data based on a study by Pew Research Centre.
The Hindu community is the most educated among 30 religious groups in the United States, based on college degrees, reveals data based on a study by Pew Research Centre.

The Unitarians Universalists, Jews, Anglicans are among the religious groups that follow. Over 35,000 US adults were surveyed in the Pew’s 2014 Religious Landscape Study.

The Pew study has reportedly used the four-year college degree, stating that it is generally regarded as the “key asset for economic success.”

The Hindus constitute the largest group with 77 percent holding a college degree, Unitarian – a religious group that draws inspiration from various religious scriptures – come second with 67 percent

While atheists and agnostics recorded for 43 percent and 42 percent respectively,

Muslims accounted 39 percent and Catholics 26 percent.

The most educated community could also be the wealthiest. The study strikes a correlation between education and economic success, four-in-ten Jews and a third of Hindus belong to households with annual incomes of at least $1,00,000.

“Given the strong correlation between educational attainment and economic success, it is not surprising that Jews and Hindus, on average, have high household incomes, with four-in-ten Jews (44%) and roughly a third of Hindus (36%) living in households with annual incomes of at least $100,000,” the report said, citing the study.

Synopsis

Leaders are born in times of crisis… this axiom can be summed into a trite preposition… greater the crisis bigger is the leader. Indian summer of 2004 saw the grand old political party of India Indian National Congress face one of its biggest crisis since its inception. Stalwarts from the grand old party and opposition were not in favour of Sonia Gandhi heading the government it was in fact one of the agenda or rather hidden agenda on which the memorable election of 2004 fought.

Post results it was evident that INC will head the coalition and if INC heads the government then Sonia will be the Prime Minister. Those who had opposed her foreign origin had now come around… those who had ideological differences with INC decided to forget it for the time being… in short all was set for the coronation and once again someone from the powerful Gandhi and Nehru clan was going to head the government… it is at this point fate decided to intervene… a twist of fate created a void and Sonia Gandhi was out of the race. Time was ripe for someone who would be acceptable to all factions… be noncontroversial… astute to pull the country through the financial crisis that was looming large… all of these qualities were supposedly found in one man who was Sardar Manmohan Singh, the man who has been around for more than three decades.

Sardar Manmohan Singh, a reserved, shy, without any political ambitions whatsoever; a man who has never been known for his oratory skills or for charismatic presence; a man who made one of the most humble beginnings.  Above all a man with no iota of any lineage to stake claim to the most coveted position; a man who has been dubbed as ‘the best Cabinet Secretary that the country never had’ is suddenly poised to become the Prime Minister of the largest democracy in the world.

However accidental the appointment might have been, Sardar Manmohan Singh was well aware of his responsibilities and the power that he had in him, the position to continue his mission for the country. Was he as naïve as the popular perception about him has always been? Was it a façade that he carefully built? With the passage of time he started displaying the brilliance of his acumen in understanding people, relationships and tackling situations… from appointment of people at key positions be it Sanjay Baru… Montek Singh Ahluwalia or be it dealing with the power play with the left.

The Accidental Prime Minister derives heavily from the book of the same title by Sanjay Baru, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s spin doctor in the capacity of media officer at the PMO. It is due to Baru’s ring side view and other journalistic accounts of that era that the film is able to project a revelatory picture of the prime minister working in a government that worked for 10 long years with two centres of power.

The audiences will witness the thrilling drama that unfolded not only in the ‘making but also the unmaking of Dr. Manmohan Singh.’ A fast paced and entertaining narrative of the political manipulations, the juicy tit bits of the corridors of power, the film would feed the insatiable hunger and curiosity of millions about what really had transpired during one of the most enigmatic periods in Indian political history… UPA I & II.

Nation marks Constitution Day

Today marks National Constitution Day, observing the importance of the administrative document and celebrating its 20 incarnations throughout the democratic history of Thailand.

Constitution Day in Thailand marks the date King Rama VII graciously signed the first charter into effect on December 10, 1932. The document transitioned the country’s administrative system to a democratic monarchy and paved the way for the establishment of Parliament and Cabinet. Under the first constitution, the nation’s monarch appointed the Cabinet, which was then tasked with administrating the nation and the Parliament, which in turn established legislation and kept the Cabinet in check.

Both the Cabinet and the monarch under the initial charter were empowered to dissolve Parliament to protect the nation’s best interests and call new general elections. The charter placed the Kingdom’s monarch in a position of great respect.

The 20th constitution, drafted when the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) assumed power in 2014, came into effect on April 6, 2017, and is considered a restart of democracy in Thailand. It paved the way for a general election to take place in 2019.
