The Election Commission is ready to decide on its move on next week’s election re-run for 28 constituencies in the South that have yet to register any candidates.

according to Election Commissioner Suphachai Somcharoen, the EC will hold a meeting on February 24 to determine whether they would continue to urge the government to issue another royal decree calling for elections in the South or to petition the Constitution Court for a review of authority pertaining to the matter.

The ruling Pheu Thai party has been pressing the EC to hold immediate poll reruns in all areas, including the 28 constituencies in nine southern provinces troubled by anti-government protesters on February 2. The move is aimed at having at least 95% of members of parliament required to convene the House next month.

The EC has expressed confidence that elections set to be organized in five provinces on March 2 should not face any disruptions. It has prepared measures to tackle any issues that may arise.

The commission has however voiced repeated worry over the southern constituencies, which are still in the midst of heavy opposition to the election. It believes that a new royal decree on the election should be issued to restart the process for the area.
