Not just the Opposition, ally Mamata Banerjee is upset as well. The Trinamool Congress chief has stormed off to Kolkata where her party will protest against the fuel hike Saturday afternoon.
Mamata, has joined hands with the Opposition against the increase in petrol prices. She is said to be miffed with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for taking away the tax exemption for Railways on goods transportation.
This may cost the Railways as much as Rs 6000 cr. And also increase freight rates by six to seven percent, completely derailing Mamata’s please-all budget.
Another UPA ally DMK also joined the bandwagon on Saturday, demanding rollback on the price hike for fuels.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is learnt to have written to Prime Minster Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, asking to roll back on fuel prices, party sorces said.
