India’s fascinating culture is showcased at Siam Paragon
INDIA’S TRADITIONS and arts are showcased in Bangkok this week in an exhibition that includes vibrant fashions designed for Bollywood superstars, conceptual photography and classical Indian dance as well as paintings, handicrafts and wood carving.
Incredible India Week, which starts tonight at Siam Paragon, marks India’s Independence Day today and celebrates the long-standing historical and cultural ties between India and Thailand.
“For centuries, India and Thailand have shared cultural and diplomatic ties – culture, tradition, religion, beliefs as well as language, literature and arts,” says Indian ambassador to Thailand Anil Wadhwa. “Siam Paragon Incredible India Week is another great opportunity for cultural exchange. It is our great pride to bring to the Thai people the essence of India to celebrate this important occasion and to further our long-standing historical and cultural ties and cordial relations.”
Kicking it off at 6 tonight in the Hall of Mirrors will be a fashion show of glamorous Indian national costumes with a contemporary twist by designers Joy Mitra and Vikram Phadnis. The two top Indian fashion figures have showcased their collections in numerous fashion weeks and are the most sought-after designers among Bollywood stars.
Mitra, who also designs many of the fabulous costumes for Bollywood’s big films, has a design philosophy that’s synonymous with style, elegance and colour. He is bringing his latest collection inspired by the magic of Bollywood to the catwalk.
Phadnis’ creations are highlighted by bright colours and vivid ornamentation and he’s a favourite with India’s best-known personalities. His line of bridal wear is famous for its cut and refined embellishments. The collection he brings to Bangkok is a celebration of vivacious and buoyant spirits.
Thai stars Savika “Pinky” Chaidej and Praiya “Poo” Suandokmai are serving as the models for tonight’s bash.
Also featured this evening is a performance of bharatanatyam, the classical dance form that has its origins in Tamil Nadu. Originally a sacred temple dance to Hindu gods, it encompasses music and rhythm characterised by powerful and dynamic geometrical and expressive movements and facial expression. The dance is accompanied by southern Indian Carnatic classical music played on the string instrument known as the veena, the flute, mridangam, double-sided drum and violin.
Siam Paragon’s Hall of Fame is home to “Royal Fables”, an exhibition of rich imperial Indian heritage with textiles, paintings, jewellery, costumes and fashions created by designers of royal descent. Members of the Indian royal families who serve as the patrons of these majestic arts and crafts heritages will also graciously take part in the festivities.
In the the Fashion Gallery on the first floor, master craftsmen will demonstrate the art of making silver filigree ornaments, miniature paintings, chikankari, delicate fabric embroidery, wood carving calligraphy and metal carving. And in the second-floor Lifestyle Hall you can sample the finest Indian coffees and teas.
Visitors can also enjoy demonstrations of exotic handicrafts and browse though the extensive selection of ethnic crafts.
The traditional lion and yak dance “Tawang Snow Lions” from Arunachal Pradesh will be staged to bring luck and prosperity. Also on offer are travel packages and best deals from airlines to destinations such as Odisha, Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh. Visitors can also enjoy authentic Indian cuisine at the “Taste of India” food fest in the market hall on the ground floor.
