Thai women upset top seed China in volleyball

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand – The Thai team upset China in the semi-finals of the 17th Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship Friday evening.

Thailand won in five thrilling sets by the scores of 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, and 16-14, according to a Bangkok Post report.

China was the tournament’s number 1 seed. The Thai team had already beaten Japan, the second seed, earlier in the tournament.

Thailand is ranked 16th in the world and will now play in the finals on Saturday at 6 p.m. against either Japan or South Korea.

The Thai team won its only Asian title in 2009. China is a powerhouse which has won 12 Asian championships.

The 5,000-seat Chatchai Hall where the Thailand-China match was held was surrounded by floodwater on Friday because of heavy rain.

People had started queueing to buy tickets for the contest at 4 a.m., however, in spite of the wet conditions
