Rohit will make amends for this wait, believes Sidhu

Navjot Singh Sidhu made his Test debut against West Indies on November 12, 1983. Amazingly, he played his next Test against New Zealand exactly five years later. And bang, he struck a century, cementing his spot. That’s why Sidhu can relate to Rohit Sharma – who made his ODI debut way back in June 2007.

“Rohit is pink right now, and when you’re pink, you hit a purple patch. Right now, there is nothing that can stop him. He’s going to enjoy a long career playing for India,” Sidhu told HT.

“They say the almighty gives you everything at one push – if you’ve had to wait for long. The poor guy has had to wait for so long.”

“And now suddenly, he’s got everything – a ODI double hundred, a Test debut hundred, Mumbai Indians captaincy, and above all god-given ability,” added Sidhu.

“Ever since he assumed a (T20) leadership role, there’s been a change in his thinking. I would be the first to admit that some years ago … in this scenario (India on 82/4 with Shane Shillingford primed for more success), Rohit would have given it away. But the maturity he showed was incredible.”

When asked if the contest with Virat Kohli for Sachin Tendulkar’s No 4 spot was just symbolic, Sidhu said: “No. It will be a huge honour for him if he gets that spot. But Rohit has a very sound technique, and that is no exaggeration. I can see him bat at any position. He is capable of opening too.”
