Notice regarding demonstrations in Bangkok

LogoHCAnti-government demonstrations have continued to take place in parts of Bangkok since early November 2013. Protesters have blockaded certain locations in Bangkok starting from 13 January 2014. These include some government buildings and major intersections in popular tourist area such asAsoke-Sukhumvit, Silom, Ratchaprasong, Pathumwan, Lumphini, LatPhrao and ChaengWattana as well as intersectionsclose to some shopping malls and hotels.

The Government of Thailand has invoked Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations (2005) in all districts of Bangkok and Nonthaburi as well as the Bang Phli district of SamutPrakan(which includes Suvarnabhumi International Airport)and the LatLumKaeo district of PathumThani with effect from 22 January 2014 for a period of sixty (60) days.

General elections in Thailand are scheduled to take place on 2 February 2014. Higher levels of protests are likely, which could head to violent incidents/disruptions. Indian nationals travelling to Thailand and resident in Bangkok are advised to take precautions for their personal safety, including by avoiding areas of protests, demonstrations, political gatherings, marches and polling stations.They are advised to regularly monitor the situation through the local media, hotels, tour operators etc. Travellers coming from or going to the airport may factor in at least one additional hour for travel to/from the city in view of potential traffic jams.

The Government of Thailand has set up a Tourist’s Friend Centre to provide information for tourists. Offices are located at the Sport Authority of Thailand in the Bangkapi district of Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, four BTS Sky train stations (Siam, Phya Thai, Ekkamai and Wong WianYai) and Hua Lampong MRT station. The Thai authorities have also announced that Police helplines at Tel No. 1599 and 191 and Traffic updates at 1197 will be operational at all hours.
