Marriott International unveils plans for more Edition hotels

Bethesda-based Marriott International Inc.    has announced plans for more Edition hotels, bolstering its bet on the boutique hotel category.

Marriott said Thursday that it would open Editons in New York, Abu Dhabi and Bankgkok, Thailand, and had contracts signed for hotels in Los Angeles and Gurgaon, India.

Marriott president Arne Sorenson said that the move is meant to reinvigorate efforts for Edition–a luxury lifestyle hotel brand was created in partnership with Ian Schrager–which has been bogged down by the slow economy and bedeviled by a squabble over control the Edition Waikiki.

“While the rollout of the Edition brand was slowed by the global economic downturn, we remain strongly committed to this brand and are dedicated to its continued development and success,” Sorenson said. “A number of other exciting projects are under way which we expect to announce in the coming months.”

Sorenson confirmed previous reports that the New York City Edition would be housed in Manhattan’s Clock Tower building at 5 Madison Avenue. Marriott bought the building from Africa Israel USA for $165 million.

The Bangkok Edition will be part of a mixed-use development planned for a skyscraper in the city while the Abu Dhabi Edition will be part of the Al Bateen Harbor mixed-use complex within the Abu Dhabi Marina. …
