National Rice and Farmers Day to be celebrated 3-6 June

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will arrange a fair to observe the National Rice and Farmers Day in order to honour Thai farmers from 3 to 6 June 2011 at the Department of Rice.

According to Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermporn Phirunsarn, the event will feature exhibitions of rice-related projects of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and worship of Mae Phosop, the goddess of rice grains.

In addition, awards will be presented to farmers and organizations with outstanding farming practices. Other highlights of the event are demonstrations and contests of rice cultivating practice and cooking methods, and academic seminars about rice and temperate cereal crops.

On 24 June 2009, the cabinet had set 5 June to be the National Rice and Farmers Day as requested by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.

The date of the National Rice and Farmers Day was selected in honour of King Rama VIII who on 5 June 1946 engaged in rice sowing, an act of great impression towards the Kingdom’s rice farmers.
