Phuket speeds up its airport expansion to be ready for Songkran

(NNT) — Phuket International Airport’s new Terminal X is nearly finished except for interior decoration. It is expected to be in service after February 15.Once fully completed, it will be able to welcome close to 40,000 passengers a day.

According to Phuket Governor, Maitree Inthusut, Phuket International Airport has seen good progress in various sections especially Terminal X. The new terminal has been completed and will serve as a check-in and check-out spot for tour groups to provide more spaces for grouped passengers.

Passengers will be able to shop and relax inside the terminal until their flights departure. Terminal X costs around 151 million baht, a small part of the overall airport expansion budget of 5.8 billion baht.

Mr. Maitree further stated that 5 aircraft bays are currently under construction. Initially, they were supposed to be completed no later than this month; however, the contractor had asked for an extension in order to move them closer to the existing 15 aircraft bays. These bays should be ready for services after Songkran festival in April; they will be able to accommodate 20-30 more aircraft arrivals per day. A total of 25 aircraft bays are expected to be built at Phuket International Airport.

A new airport cargo warehouse will be completed in March, while the old one will be converted into an international terminal, an office building, and a parking building with a capacity to house 1,000 cars.
