Thailand to host IOI for the First time (22 to 29 July 2011)

Thailand will play host to the 23rd International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2011) from 22 to 29 July 2011 in Pattaya city, according to the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST).

IPST Director Pornpun Waitayangkoon said it is the first time for Thailand to host the IOI. She hoped that the competition will encourage Thai youth to realise the importance of computer science study as well as benefit curriculum improvement within the country.

Thai students taking part in the IOI this year comprise Mr Pasin Manurangsi from Bangkok Christian College, Mr Sorawit Suriyakan from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Mr Laphonchai Jirachuphun and Mr Witchakorn Kamonpornvichit from Trium Udom Suksa School.

Moreover, Thailand, as the host, holds the privilege to send another 4-member team to the competition in order to open chance for more youngsters to gain new experience and sharpen their skills at such an international stage.

Thai contestants last year won one gold, two silvers, and one bronze at the IOI held in Ontario, Canada.

Mr Pasin was the gold medallist from the last competition and also grabbed one silver from the 21st IOI in Bulgaria in 2009. In addition, he also claimed a gold medal from the 49th International Mathematical Olympiad in Spain in 2008.
